Post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD is a disorder that is associated with anxiety. The disorder itself is created by stressful or frightening situations and events that a person has experienced.

The type of events
There are many events that can lead to the suffering of PTSD, and these include:
  • Serious road accidents
  • Violent personal assaults, such as sexual assault, mugging or robbery
  • Prolonged sexual abuse, violence or severe neglect
  • Witnessing violent deaths
  • Military combat
  • Being held hostage
  • Terrorist attacks
  • Natural disasters, such as severe floods, earthquakes or tsunamis

PTSD can come on almost immediately after someone has experienced a stressful or frightening situation. Some cases of PTSD will not show themselves for months later, even going into years. Stats show that 1 in 3 people will get PTSD after they experience some kind of situation.

Signs and symptoms
Symptoms of PTSD include:
  • Nightmares
  • Flashbacks
  • Feeling isolated
  • Feeling guilt
  • Feeling irritable
  • Problems sleeping, i.e. Insomnia
  • Difficult concentrating
These symptoms can be very severe and persistent, resulting in a significant impact on the person’s day-to-day life.

When to seek medical advice
After a traumatic event, you feel some of the symptoms of PTSD, but this could just be your normal reaction to said event. However, if you do not improve over the next few weeks, then you should see your GP as soon as possible. It is usually around 4 weeks that you could go and see your doctor, as this would give it enough time to see if you were just reacting naturally to you or if you do indeed have PTSD.
